What we do

We partner with several Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., chapters and other community-based organizations to establish scholastic chess programs and events that offer youth chess instruction, league play, tournament competitions, and collegiate scholarships.

Scholarship Partners

We have established memoranda of understanding with several colleges and universities that offer scholarships to the high school championship winners in chess tournaments we organize. In past years, that included the University of Maryland (Baltimore County) and Alabama A&M University. Currently we have agreements with Alabama State University, Hampton University, Howard University, Morgan State University, and Morris Brown College. We are expecting partnerships with several other institutions.

The intellectual prowess required to learn chess and play it well are the same skills one needs to excel academically. Several institutions of higher learning have added to their curriculum a class called "Chess and Crucial Thinking." We would like to inspire young people to use their minds to reach their true potential and continue their education in an activity other than baseball, football, or basketball.

The merits of chess go beyond creating better thinkers who tend to show more discipline, persistence, and concentration in their schoolwork. Chess can serve as a bridge that brings together boys and girls from all walks of life, while encouraging socialization skills that cross cultural lines and help create school learning communities. Chess is especially great for self-esteem building, allowing many children to feel smart for the first time.
