His passion for the game of chess started after being introduced to it at the Ormsby Boys Club in Louisville, KY, in 1970. From there, he participated in competition as a member of the Manly Jr. high and DuPont Manual high school chess teams.
Since 2012, Tony has implemented an educational initiative partnering with his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., to provide an exceptional educational program that is unique in its delivery and overall effectiveness to the youth in northeast Ohio. Hosting scholastic chess tournaments and instruction has provided the opportunity for students to stay in school, strengthen their educational skill set, provide scholarship monies to assist with college costs, and make possible employment through chess. Alpha can take pride in being the first to make such opportunities available through chess and in knowing Alpha is making a difference in our communities.
The social impact of a chess program to students in our community, northeast Ohio and participants is priceless. Tony’s goal is to promote chess as a teaching tool throughout the Alpha’s national footprint of chapters because it "directly contributes to academic performance and makes kids smarter, more critical thinkers, better problem solvers, and more independent decision makers while enjoying themselves."
His goal is to teach the basic elements of chess in a way that is entertaining and fun. He hopes that this will get people interested in making chess a hobby, a pastime, a way to relax, and a source of endless fun, all of which it can be if approached with the right mindset.
If you're looking for enjoyment, excitement, and fun, Y not chess?
